The Frontier closed its doors for good at 12:00 A.M. (Pacific Time) on July 16, 2007 and was demolished on November 13, 2007 to make way for construction of a new resort that will resemble the Plaza Hotel in New York City. The demolition and its preparation were filmed for the National Geographic Channel and a program called "Blowdown: Vegas Casino".
The 16-story hotel tower was felled with over 1,000 pounds of explosives before a group of reporters and bystanders to make way for a multibillion-dollar resort bearing The Plaza brand. The development company plans to build a Plaza Las Vegas on the New Frontier land, with the project scheduled to be completed in 2012 and replace it with a replica to be called the Las Vegas Plaza.
“The sign was taken by the request of Steve Wynn and we were happy to accommodate. The sign is being taken down by his design and development group -- we just gave them permission to come on the property,” said Joe McIntyre, construction manager of ELAD Las Vegas. The marquee of the hotel was still standing until December 10, 2008 when it was taken down at the request of Steve Wynn prior to his opening of the Encore hotel. The Atrium Tower lasted only 18 years, being built in 1989 and destroyed in 2007.
The New Frontier opened back in October of 1942 when Las Vegas wasn't much more than a desert pit-stop on the way to California. When Howard Hughes bought the property in the 1960's, he took the "new" away, re-naming it simply "The Frontier." Later owners brought back the full name.
The New Frontier had 65 years of memories. That’s 65 years of entertainment — celebrities getting their start or maybe final performance. There were incredible wins, weddings, parties, friendship and fun. Were you a part of it? We’d love to hear about it. And of course, The New Frontier was the centerpiece of the culinary union strike that went on for more than six years in the 1990's. The strike finally ended when developer Phil Ruffin bought the property in 1998.

So, which hotel will be allowed to use the "Plaza" name in Las Vegas? Well, both of them. This should be interesting. Of course, it probably won't matter until at least 2012.
You can easy access to other nearby casinos, such as the Stardust and Treasure Island. All this at a very modest cost. And like the major players, they have packages for touring the Las Vegas golf courses at a budget.
